Meet Connie, Our January In the Spotlight

Written by Nicole Gerke

We’ve been blessed with such amazing Cape Fear CREW leadership in the past, and 2019 is no exception!

Connie brings an energy to our organization that is highly contagious and awe-inspiring. After learning more about Connie, you may wonder to yourself, how does she do it? She’s not afraid to put herself out there, consistently offers help and encouragement to others, and is never shy about uplifting her fellow professional or promoting the CREW mission.

As Connie continues her excitement and momentum into the year ahead, not only is she highly motivated to expand membership, which grew to over 50 members in 2018, she also encourages each of us to get involved in a way that will make our membership more meaningful to us.

You start to understand a little better about how Connie stays so driven to be successful when she describes her passions and life outside of her career. She enjoys boating, traveling, learning to golf, watching kids in their activities – her 13-year old daughter Ella and five-year old Griffin, and spending time with her husband of 18 years, Tom. She is a proud native of Wilmington and shares the idea that many Cape Fear CREW members understand well, “there’s no place I’d rather live and work.”

Connie celebrated 17 years with SunTrust in September 2018. She has worked in several positions in retail branches, including branch manager, until transitioning to business banking in 2007. Gaining knowledge, and applying her wisdom and expertise to help others, makes her tick, “I really enjoy having the opportunity to learn about all of the interesting businesses in the Wilmington area. I love that I get to help owners grow their businesses. It is very rewarding to help a business purchase their first building, purchase equipment that will allow them to expand into a new product line or help someone buy a business. My goal is to help people achieve financial well being, however it may be defined.”

After graduating from UNCW, Connie worked for a web and software development company. She explains that she was looking for a career change and knew a branch manager who was hiring a financial service advisor, “He thought I would be a good fit, but that I may get bored. 17 years later I am still with SunTrust, and I am not bored.”

It’s easy to see the commitment and passion that Connie continues to bring the CREW organization. She divulges, “CREW provides a great support system and strong relationships with professionals that I feel comfortable referring my client clients and friends to. CREW has also provided me leadership opportunities both with the Cape Fear chapter and through CREW Network.” Connie is a previous board member of the local and state March of Dimes Board of Directors. She’s currently involved with the New Hanover Regional Medical Center NICU Advisory Council. She shared why that organization was important to her personally, revealing “my daughter was born 10 weeks prematurely (she is totally healthy now!), so I decided to get involved with those organizations after that experience.” Connie is a 2010 graduate of the Wilmington Chamber’s Leadership Wilmington Program, a member of the UNCW Cameron School of Business Economics & Finance Advisory Board and is also involved in several other networking organizations in the Wilmington area. We are so lucky to have this amazing renaissance woman leading us as Cape Fear CREW President in 2019!
